Jahrhundertfluten /
100 floods
workshop + installation (found object (book), stand, collective speculative publication); 2025
The installation brings together a water-damaged book found in the street and its counterpart, a speculative publication derived from a collective process.
Die Jahrhundertflut in Sachsen documents the 2002 flood in Dresden and Saxony. The damage suggests that a second flood may have reached the book, undermining the idea of a “once-in-a-century” disaster. This poetic contradiction speaks to the failure of language and media to grasp the ongoing nature of the climate catastrophe.
From this object unfolds a participatory process by way of an open call and a workshop. Participants collectively question and rework the visual and rhetoric elements which constitute archives and narratives of floods— both official press photos and texts, but also personal images and memories. Through collage, dissolving, scanning, writing, a river encounter (…) emerges a speculative publication: a reimagined “flood book” that asks what kind of memory object might resist both forgetting and the numbing spectacle of disaster.
